We at downtown orthodontics want your orthodontic experience to be an enjoyable one. So now that you are wearing braces, here are a few things you will need to know.
Eating with Braces
Try to chose soft foods like oatmeal, pasta and soup for your first week with braces on.
Never bite into foods like apples and corn on the cob but rather cut them into bite size pieces and use your back teeth for all of your chewing.
Avoid all hard and sticky foods like nuts, nacho chips, pizza crusts, Ice cubes, caramel, fruit roll ups and licorice. |

Temporary Discomfort
You may experience tongue, cheek or lip irritation from your braces. Use dental wax obtained from our office or your local pharmacy to cover the braces and prevent ulcer formation.
Should your teeth become tender to chewing, take 1-2 Tylenol or Advil to alleviate the sensitivity. Prolonged or severe pain should be reported to our office as soon as possible. |

Regular Dental Visits
Please continue to see your dentist or dental hygienist for professional dental check-ups and cleanings 2 - 4 times per year while you or your child are wearing braces.
Your dentist will not only monitor your teeth for signs of tooth decay but he or she will also check your gums for possible signs of gum disease and bone loss. In some cases, you may be advised to visit a gum specialist. |
